Nature’s tux: celebrate the penguin!

PENGUIN AWARENESS DAY

If you’ve seen “March of the Penguins” one too many times — and don’t have the time to trek to Africa — then make the comparatively short journey to New Jersey. There, on January 20, you celebrate Penguin Awareness Day. Who says there’s such thing? The Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. They’ve set aside a day to welcome four new African penguins to the zoo (even more additional penguins are slated to arrive later in the winter). These latest arrivals are native to the rocky shores of Southwest Africa — whose coastline has a climate that’s strikingly similar to that of New Jersey’s. That’s only one of the little educational nuggets you’ll learn. At the Turtle Back Zoo (560 Northfield Ave., West Orange, New Jersey). For more information, call 973-731-5800 or visit www.turtlebackzoo.com.

Playful and ominous: Norma Markley’s neon creation

Day n Nite

Norma Markley’s collection of neon works begins in the street-level shop Eva NY and continues below ground to the Y Gallery’s new cave-like Bowery space. The instillation is divided into two contrasting and polarized spaces which conjure unexpected images and associations from a pervasive, throwaway culture. The dreamy glow and cursive possibilities of Markley’s creations evoke the inviting and ominous bright light landscapes of Vegas, Disney, and Times Square. Through Jan 17, at Y Gallery (355A Bowery St, between 3rd and 4th Streets). Open Daily 12-8pm. Call 212 925 3890.
