The city’s new bike markings in the middle of Grand St. near E. Broadway may seem dangerous because they encourage bikes and cars to ride in the same lane, but they are better than nothing, said Noah Bundick of Transportation Alternatives. The markings try to convey that cars and bikes will both be allowed in the center of the road, making drivers aware that bikes will be in the lane with them and preventing bikers from being hit by opening car doors while riding to close to parked cars, Bundick said. “These are brand new treatments, so there’s obviously a learning curve, which is why you’re confused at first look,” he said. Transportation Alternatives has begun working with the city’s Department of Transportation to educate the public about the markings.
