A tourist from Spain was struck and killed by a double-decker bus Wednesday near the historic Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Morningside Heights, police said.
The 68-year-old woman, Wanda Canestri, was hit at about 3 p.m. on Amsterdam Avenue, between 112th and 113th streets. Canestri was visiting the city with her sister, police said.
The white tour bus had unloaded passengers and was pulling out when it hit Canestri, who was trying to cross the street heading west. The bus then pulled her underneath, police said.
It was not immediately clear what company operated the bus.
The stop near the church is a popular one on many tour busses in the city. The Episcopal Church was built in the early 1890s and is the largest cathedral in the U.S., according to its website.
Canestri was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
