Driving northbound on West Street a few weeks ago, I noticed two conflicting speed limit signs between Warren and Chambers Streets. One sign was for a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit. The other sign was for a 35 mile-per-hour speed limit. Both were right next to each other on the left side of the roadway. Which sign is correct?

Lew, Battery Park City

Dear Lew,

The speed limit along most of Route 9A is 35 miles-per-hour but where there’s construction, it’s been lowered to 25 miles-per-hour. It’s possible that either the 35 mile-per-hour sign was covered up and the covering fell off or someone simply forgot to remove the sign. Either way, the New York State Department of Transportation (N.Y.S.D.O.T.) removed the sign tout-de-suite upon hearing from Transit Sam. Should you come across such a sign conflict in the future, it’s always safer to adhere to the lower speed limit.

Transit Sam

Dear Transit Sam,

A few Sundays ago, I was riding in a taxi from Penn Station to Hudson Street by the Holland Tunnel. The driver crashed into two yellow poles on the sidewalk near the Holland Tunnel. The police who witnessed the accident asked me if I needed medical attention. I didn’t think I did at that time so they flagged down another taxi that drove me to my destination. My problem is that now I need medical care and the T.L.C. has refused to assist me without a medallion number even though I told them the driver’s name along with the date/time of the incident. I appreciate any more information you can give me.

Alison, Lower Manhattan

Dear Alison,

I hope you’re OK. I spoke with the Taxi and Limousine Commission, and they said they’d be happy to help even without the medallion number (although it does help). Provide a copy of the police report, if you can. To obtain a copy, reach out to the First Precinct at (212) 334-0611. Then reach out to T.L.C. at 311 or (212) NEW-YORK, and they will direct you accordingly. If you need further help, please let me know.
