ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED WEDNESDAY, CHRISTMAS DAY

Merry Christmas Lower Manhattanites! Travel safely and enjoy the holiday.

On Christmas Day – and Christmas Day only – alternate side parking rules, meter rules, and rules like “No Parking Monday through Friday” are suspended. All rules that include ‘anytime’ are still in effect.

Holiday travel will ramp up over the weekend as many head back to the city for work on Monday. The Battery and Holland tunnels, and the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges will all get hit with inbound traffic.

Post-Christmas sale shoppers are going to be out in full force this weekend. Shopping areas throughout Lower Manhattan will be completely jammed from now through the New Year including the shopping rows along Broadway and West Broadway in Soho. Wednesday, the 26th, is the biggest return and exchange day of the year.

It’ll be especially tough to get into Lower Manhattan late at night this week: one inbound lane of the Holland Tunnel will close 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, and Monday nights. Plus, the New York-bound tube of the Lincoln Tunnel will close 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday night, midnight to 8 a.m. Saturday, and 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday. That will drive inbound traffic down to the already-slow Holland Tunnel and right onto Canal St.

Note these transit service changes: the subway will operate on a regular weekday schedule Tuesday. Christmas Day, subways and buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

The Giants take on the Redskins 1 p.m. Sunday. The Lincoln Tunnel will be extra busy with fan traffic, sending some drivers down to the Holland Tunnel. Watch for backups on Canal St. and down to Varick.

Nassau St. will intermittently close between Ann and Beekman Sts. through Tuesday, December 31. During closures, northbound traffic will be detoured to William St.

The full closure of Franklin St. between Hudson and Varick Sts. is nearly complete; the roadway is scheduled to reopen in early January.

Similar news for Peck Slip: the full closure between Pearl and Water Sts. is set to finish by the end of the year.
