Transit Sam: Week of Apr. 28, 2016

Dates: Thurs., Apr. 28 – Wed., May 4

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED THURSDAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY

Sunday is May Day! The first of May is notorious for protest action, and one workers’ rights group will be gathering in Union Square at noon. At 3 p.m. they’ll march across 14th St. to Avenue C, then down to 10th St. and towards the FDR, which means expect slowdowns on the FDR. Other likely targets for protests and demonstrations include City Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge and Wall Street. Be sure to follow me on Twitter @GridlockSam and check the website www.GridlockSam.com for the latest on demonstrations and road closures.

The Five Boro Bike Tour returns Sunday, and since it begins and ends in Lower Manhattan, there will be plenty of traffic disruptions. Closures begin at 5:30 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. on the following streets: Whitehall St. between South and Water Sts., State St. between Whitehall St. and Battery Pl., Battery Pl. between State and West Sts., Washington St. between Battery Pl. and Morris St., Greenwich St. between Battery Park and Trinity Pl., Trinity Pl. between Greenwich and Cedar Sts., Church St. between Cedar and Canal Sts., and White St. between Sixth Ave. and Franklin Pl.

The Chelsea Visiting Neighbors Festival will close Eighth Ave. between 14th and 23rd Sts. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Slow moving for drivers headed into Lower Manhattan Thursday night and going into the weekend. In the Lincoln Tunnel, the New York-bound tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. This closure will send inbound traffic to the Holland Tunnel, where one New York-bound lane will close at 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Traffic will be slow on Canal St.

In the Battery Park Underpass there will be a full closure of the north tube from the FDR to West St. 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each weekday night and 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Use the detour and exit onto South St., continue on to Whitehall St., turn left onto State St. to Battery Pl., and then turn left onto Battery Pl. to West St. The North and South tubes will both fully close in both directions 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. each weekday night. For the south tube detour, go south on West St., left onto Battery Pl., continuing onto State St., and going one block north on Water St., then right onto Broad St.
