Transit Sam, week of Aug. 20, 2015: Get ready for football traffic

Thurs., Aug. 20 – Wed., Aug. 26

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE IN EFFECT ALL WEEK

What does football season have to do with Lower Manhattan traffic?  It’s the domino theory; when the George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel get overloaded the dominoes fall to the Holland Tunnel. The Jets face off against the Falcons in a preseason match-up 7:30 p.m. Friday at MetLife Stadium. Then, the Giants challenge the Jaguars 7:30 p.m. Saturday. More than 50,000 fans are expected to show up at each game, so a crush of drivers will take to the Lincoln Tunnel, sending more down to the Holland.

Manhattan Bridge news update for Lower Manhattan! A few of you wrote about the traffic along Canal St. leading to the Manhattan Bridge. I got to the bottom of it. N.Y.C. D.O.T. has made the lower level of the bridge inbound 24-hours a day, so traffic leaving Manhattan will only have the two upper roadway lanes to get to Brooklyn.

The Greenwich Village Chamber of Commerce Broadway Festival will close Broadway between Waverly Pl. and 14th St. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

In the Lincoln Tunnel, one tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. During the same time, one New York-bound lane and one New Jersey-bound lane will close in the Holland Tunnel. The Lincoln closure will send traffic down to the Holland, which will itself be slow for the lane closure. Expect delays into Canal St.

All Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge will close 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.Thursday night, midnight to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.

Fletcher St. will close between Front and South Sts., Thames St. will close between Greenwich St. and Trinity Pl., and Dutch St. between Fulton and John Sts. will close for building construction each day this week.

On West St./Route 9A, one southbound lane will close between West Thames and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The Stone Street Pedestrian Mall will close Stone St. between Hanover Sq. and Broad St., and Mill Ln. between Stone and South William Sts. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.each day this week.
