Transit Sam, week of Jan. 23, 2014

Thurs., Jan. 23 – Wed., Jan. 29

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING IS SCHEDULED TO BE IN EFFECT ALL WEEK, CHECK 311 FOR UPDATES

Below-freezing temperatures are forecasted through the weekend, so the snow will stick around. Avoid driving if at all possible, and if you must drive, use caution.

Last week’s water main break on Fifth Ave. continues to close Fifth Ave. between 12th and 14th Sts. There will continue to be a ripple effect for many cross streets and a domino effect for the two parallel southbound routes, Broadway and Seventh Ave. People are diverting from Fifth Ave. at Madison Square Park where they have the easy slip-off to Broadway. So Broadway is overloaded from 23rd St. south. Drivers who take Fifth Avenue to Washington Square South and around the park to LaGuardia Place most likely take Seventh into Varick, so those streets are seeing more traffic. Thirteenth St. is still closed between Sixth Ave. and University Pl., affecting 11th, 14th, and 9th Sts. Southbound M1, M2, M3, and M5 buses are detoured from Fifth Ave. to Park Avenue South between 23rd and 14th Sts.

A Chinese New Year celebration will close many streets in Chinatown and the Lower East Side 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. Affected streets include: Canal St. between Baxter and Mott Sts., Mott St. between Canal and Bayard Sts. and between Canal and Grand Sts., Bayard St. between Mott and Elizabeth Sts., Elizabeth St. between Bayard and Canal Sts., Pell St. between the Bowery and Doyers St., Doyers St. between Pell St. and the Bowery, Pell St. between Doyers and Mott Sts., Mott St. between Bayard and Worth Sts., Bayard St. between Baxter and Mott Sts., and Mulberry St. between Bayard and Canal Sts. Expect delays in getting on or off the Manhattan Bridge.

All Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge will close 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, as well as midnight Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

In the Lincoln Tunnel, the New York-bound south tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. That will drive inbound traffic south to the Holland Tunnel, in which one inbound lane will be closed during the same period. Expect late night delays.

At the Fulton Street subway station, MTA crews have closed the entrance on Broadway at Fulton St. A new, permanent entrance has been opened on John St. just east of Broadway inside the Corbin Building.

Beginning Friday, Leonard St. will fully close between Hudson and Varick Sts. The street is expected to reopen by late March.

Washington St. will fully close between Laight and Hubert Sts. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through mid-February. Northbound traffic will be rerouted to Hudson Street.

Pine St. will close between Pearl and Water Sts. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Collister St. will close between Hubert and Laight Sts. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through early February.
