ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED MONDAY FOR LABOR DAY
This may be the latest date Labor Day can be but I’m expecting no relief from traffic after the sweltering week we are having. Whether you stay in the city or head out of town, there will be some mean getaway traffic to face. Beginning around 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, West St./Route 9A, the F.D.R., and the Holland and Battery tunnels will get hectic as vacationers skip town for one more long weekend.
To compound matters the Jets face off against the Eagles 7 p.m. Thursday at MetLife stadium in NFL pre-season play. Since Thursday afternoon is the unofficial start of the holiday weekend, traffic under and over the Hudson will be a mess. Fans and vacationers will take the Holland (and Lincoln) out of the city en masse, so get an early start if you can. Post-game fan traffic back into Manhattan will be slow too, since one New York-bound lane in the Holland will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.
At the same time Thursday night, one tube will close in the Lincoln Tunnel. The Lincoln closure will send traffic down to the Holland, which will itself be slow for the lane closure. Expect delays into Canal St.
On Monday, alternate side parking rules will be suspended, as will meter rules. Signs that say “No Parking” or “No Standing” on certain weekdays, in this case Monday, are also suspended. Signs with the word “anytime” are still in effect.
Wednesday, Sept. 9th, is the first day back for N.Y. C.public schools. That means the morning rush hour traffic is about to get a little slower.
The D.O.T. Weekend Walks Mid-Autumn Moon Festival will close Forsyth St. between Division and Henry Sts. 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
All Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, midnight Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. A brief respite from the closures Sunday night, and then it’s back to all Manhattan-bound lanes closed11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
On West St./Route 9A, one southbound lane will close between West Thames and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Thursday and Friday.
The Stone Street Pedestrian Mall will close Stone St. between Hanover Sq. and Broad St. and Mill Ln. between Stone and South William Sts. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day this week.
