The Union Sq. Community Coalition has been working with the Public Art Fund to commission a temporary sculpture in Union Sq. Park through the “In the Public Realm” program, in which emerging New York artists create works for public spaces. The proposed work is Peter Coffin’s “Symmetrical Pirate,” above, a 10-ft.-tall sculpture of a swashbuckler with two parrots, two peg legs and two eye patches. Its proposed location will be the southeast triangle — a symmetrical counterpart to the Gandhi statue on the park’s west side. Installation is scheduled for the fall.
