Two hands would be more than enough in most towns, but it won’t get the job done if you want to count the number of Village jazz venues offering classic, contemporary and cutting-edge music until the wee small hours of the morning. A half-decade ago, the Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce began to recognize iconic jazz artists by hosting Village Jazz Alive. This swanky, swinging, fall destination event pays tribute to singers, musicians, and composers who contribute to Greenwich Village’s enduring music culture.
This year, Ann Hampton Callaway joins the ranks of past honorees Odetta, Art D’Lugoff, Randy Weston and Arturo Sandoval. Admired throughout the world as a singer, composer, arranger, lyricist, producer and educator, Callaway’s distinct voice and impressive range will be on display when The Ann Hampton Callaway Trio performs (witty between-song banter included in price of admission).
The winner of our GIVEAWAY will receive two tickets, compliments of this newspaper and the Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce. To enter, send an email to Jazz@TheVillager.com, along with your phone number (only enter once, please). A winner will be selected at random, and contacted by phone on Oct. 20. If you want to guarantee attendance, visit bit.ly/VillageJazzAlive, where your purchase of VIP tickets will include a meet and greet reception with Ann and a signed CD. Regular admission includes free drinks, appetizers and a performance by the Trio. The event takes place on Wed., Oct. 22, 7–9 p.m. at the Metropolitan Room (34 W. 22nd St., btw. Fifth & Sixth Aves.).
