World Trade Center: A look back at the iconic buildings

The original World Trade Center buildings were completed in April 1973 after seven years of construction. The Twin Towers surpassed the Empire State Building in height, making them the tallest buildings in the world at the time.

Some 50,000 people worked each day in the World Trade Center complex by the 2000s, and it was home to more than 430 companies.

On February 26, 1993, a van loaded with explosives was detonated in a parking garage under the north tower. Six people were killed.

Eight years later, on September 11, 2001, it was destroyed in a terror attack that killed 2,750 people. Three later deaths were determined to be related, caused by illness resulting from the attacks.

In April 2006, work began on the new 1 World Trade Center. Standing at 1,776 feet, it’s now one of the tallest buildings in the world.
