Brett Baty drove in three runs to help the Mets snap a three-game losing streak and avoid a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox with a 5-1 win on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
The third baseman, who continues his charge to cement a place on the big-league roster after multiple failed attempts in recent years, has driven in 10 runs in his last 12 games.
“There’s something about the way he’s carrying himself on and off the field, in the clubhouse, the way he prepares,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said of Baty. “That’s what you want to see out of everyone, especially young players.”
While the rest of the Mets (30-20) lineup was mired in a considerable, collective slump, especially with runners in scoring position, Baty came through against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet in the top of the second inning with a two-out single that scored Mark Vientos from third. Luis Torrens, who was on second, was thrown out at home.
He broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning with a single down the left-field line to score two more.
Juan Soto added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the seventh before Francisco Lindor homered over the Green Monster in left in the ninth for added insurance.
Starting pitcher Tylor Megill allowed one run on four hits with a career-high-tying 10 strikeouts in just 4.2 innings of work.
With the bases loaded and having already given up a run with two outs in the fifth, Megill was lifted for Huascar Brazoban, who got out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out star third baseman Alex Bregman.
The right-handed reliever allowed just one hit across 2.1 scoreless innings to get the win.
