Juan Soto hit his second home run of the season — his first in 13 games — while Pete Alonso and Luisangel Acuna snagged two hits apiece in the New York Mets 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night at Target Field.
Acuna, batting out of the No. 9 hole, also stole a base and scored twice to help the Mets (11-5) stay red-hot with nine wins in their last 11 games.
He came around to score on Alonso’s two-out single in the top of the third to open the scoring. Alonso now has 19 RBI in his first 16 games, tied for third-most in franchise history through a season-opening 16-game stretch. Only John Buck (21 in 2013) and Jeff Kent (23 in 1994) had mroe.
Christian Vazquez’s sacrifice fly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Mark Vientos replied immediately in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to score Alonso. With two outs in the frame, Luis Torrens hit a comebacker to reliever Justin Topa, but his wild throw allowed Vientos to score from second to make it a 3-1 game.
Soto put things to bed in the top of the seventh when he launched his first home runs since the second game of the season (March 28) — a majestic 405-foot two-run shot to right-center field off reliever Jorge Alcala
Mets starter Clay Holmes picked up his second win of the season, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out eight across five innings of work.
