New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is not just headed back to the All-Star Game but also to the Home Run Derby.
The 29-year-old picked up his fourth All-Star Game nod on Sunday night, setting a franchise record for most selections to a Midsummer Classic by a first baseman. He also becomes the 11th player in team history to be named to four or more All-Star teams.
Alonso ranks sixth in the National League this season with 18 home runs and is tied for eighth with 21 doubles. He will be the only Mets’ representation at the 94th All-Star Game, which will take place on July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX, home of the Rangers.
For a fifth time, he will also take part in MLB’s Home Run Derby, where he will look to tie Ken Griffey Jr.’s record of winning the competition three times. He won in 2019 and 2021 but fell short in each of the last two years.
Alonso has been one of baseball’s premier sluggers since debuting in 2019. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 210 home runs — no other player in baseball has hit more than him since then.
The Home Run Derby will take place the night before the Midsummer Classic on July 15.
