A popular Brooklyn jazz bar will be closed until further notice due to damage from a fire that killed two people in Brooklyn.

Made in New York Jazz Cafe & Bar released a  statement on Jan. 27 expressing that the bar would be closing down for the time being. The bar, located at 155 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, suffered damage from a fire that ultimately claimed the the lives of 22-year-old Steven Munoz and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Destiny Marmolejo.

“First and foremost, our condolences go to the two people on the top floor of the building who lost their lives in the fire. Less importantly, this disaster has caused irreparable damage to the entire club,” said Michael Brovkine, cofounder of Made in New York Jazz Cafe & Bar. “Our light, sound, instruments, stage and bar have either been destroyed or badly compromised by smoke and water. It is likely to be another week before we’re able to start to accurately assess how bad the situation is.”

All previously scheduled shows at Made in New York Jazz for dates after Jan. 23 have been canceled and tickets purchased for those dates are in the process of being refunded.

Brovkine is continuing the Made in New York mission, delivering unique lineups of both jazz greats and up-and-coming artists, by preparing for the 7th Annual Made In New York Jazz Competition Gala on May 16 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The show will celebrate the centennial of Charlie Parker.

“We had intended to move the venue in the coming months in any case but, given the uncertainties of our new reality, we are going to have to put a pause on these plans,” said Brovkine. “Our intention is absolutely to reopen eventually, but where and when is a question we won’t be able to answer for quite some time.”
