The upcoming first Spider-Man film in Sony Pictures’ reboot will be titled “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Sony made the announcement Wednesday at the trade show CinemaCon in Las Vegas. While Sony, rather than Disney, owns film rights to the venerable Marvel superhero, Spider-Man’s next solo adventure will be part of Disney’s “Marvel Cinematic Universe” canon of interrelated movies, due to a February 2015 deal between the studios.
The film, directed by Jon Watts and introducing Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, remains scheduled for a July 7, 2017, release. Spider-Man will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, however, in Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War,” due out May 6.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told CraveOnline.com in April 2015 that the new movie “will not be an origin story” but would focus on high-school student Peter Parker learning to deal with his new powers. Director Watts specified to Empire magazine that September, “There are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben. I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high school movie. We’re really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He’s just 15 now.”
The web-slinging superhero, created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko in 1962’s “Amazing Fantasy” No. 15, went on to become Marvel Comics’ flagship character. He was portrayed by Nicholas Hammond in a 1970s TV series; Tobey Maguire in a 2002-2007 film trilogy directed by Sam Raimi; and Andrew Garfield in a pair of movies in 2012 and 2014.
