Kitchen organization tips: 10 steps to cleaner cabinets, counters and drawers

  • Some kitchen tools are not meant to last a lifetime. Wooden spoons don't age well. Once they start to split, they can harbor bacteria. Throw them out. If your nonstick pans are chipped, the chips probably wound up in your food. You're better off buying inexpensive nonstick pans at a restaurant supply store every few years than trying to turn one into an heirloom.

  • Unless you regularly have groups of people cooking in your kitchen, you don't need six vegetable peelers -- or spatulas, or whisks.

  • Divide your tool drawer into discrete sections for beverage-related tools (corkscrews, bottle openers), tools with blades (peelers, shears, can-openers), spoon-ish tools (ice cream scoops, slotted spoons) and so on.
