Justine Lynch owns MOUNTAIN with her husband Tom McCauley. They are both acupuncturists. Tom also runs the kitchen (he was the former owner of Miracle Bar & Grill in the West Village).
The couple has lived nearby Prospect Lefferts Gardens since 2006, and lived in the Rockaways for four years before that. They have twin daughters. Their mission is to provide the services they believe in, but also to be a part of the community, which is why they offer free community health clinics.
“If our community is healthy, it’s better for everyone,” said Lynch.

At MOUNTAIN, various approaches to holistic healthcare are offered, including: acupuncture, foot reflexology, massage therapy and Reiki and Kinesiology. Most are available on a sliding pay scale.
Lynch practices 5-element acupuncture, an ancient therapy that’s used in phases set to nature’s seasons. Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture (TCM) is also offered.

“I think people can come in and have an experience of healing though eating,” Lynch said.

MOUNTAIN opened in Crown Heights last month, and is unlike any other business establishment in the city. Part health food cafe, part holistic health center, MOUNTAIN offers services that are not readily available in the neighborhood.
“We wanted a place where people could be introduced to alternative culture,” said co-owner Justine Lynch. “What i’m hoping is people see this places as a place for balance.”
In a place like New York City, and indeed in most urban environments, getting ahead is often the goal and the inspiration for people, said Lynch. MOUNTAIN, which was seven years in the making, is intended to be an answer to that.
“We’re bridging two gaps,” said Lynch. “Everybody wants good health… and “[this] needs to be a place for peace.”
