9/11 mental health assistance still available

The 9/11 Commission’s visit to New York on May 18 and 19 caused many people to relive their painful memories of Sept. 11, 2001. The 9/11 Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program continues to assist those directly affected by the terror attack and their families.

Nearly three years after the disaster, some people still suffer sleeplessness, irritability, alcohol or substance abuse, or other problems related to the events of 9/11.

The 9/11 Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program offers financial assistance with the out-of-pocket costs of mental health and substance abuse treatment for those directly affected by the tragedy, regardless of insurance, immigration status or residency and is funded by the American Red Cross and the September11th Fund.

Those eligible include family members of victims, rescue and recovery workers, those who evacuated from Lower Manhattan and witnessed the event first-hand, residents living south of Canal St. and those who worked below Canal St. and lost their jobs or wages. For complete eligibility information, visit www.9-11MentalHealth.org, or call 1-800-Lifenet or 1-877-746-4987.
