From left, Joe Sorge, “Subway Vigilante” Bernard Goetz and Jim “Mosaic Man” Power put up a new batch of decorative squirrel houses in Tompkins Sq. Park recently. Power did the mosaic around the squirrel houses, Goetz organized the campaign and carpenter Sorge built the houses. Goetz and Power put up mosaic squirrel houses in the park last year as well. Although he is a protector of small animals, Goetz will forever be associated with violence. On Dec. 22, 1984, he shot Darrell Cabey, a black youth, on a subway train in Manhattan, leaving him paralyzed and brain damaged, after Cabey tried to mug him. Goetz was acquitted of attempted murder but was convicted on weapons charges and served 8 1/2 months in jail.
