Members of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation have been monitoring the Department of Buildings’ Web site for updates on the Tunnel Garage in Soho and recently discovered the garage’s owners have applied for a demolition permit. The garage — built in anticipation of the Holland Tunnel’s construction — has been on the society’s “watch list,” a list of buildings the society considers at risk of being razed. G.V.S.H.P. is making “one last appeal” to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to save the building, where a new residential project is planned. In preparation for the demolition, in what the society’s director, Andrew Berman, called “ironic,” ad billboards that covered the garage’s historic facade for more than a decade were recently removed.
