The rain failed to stop another weekend of fun and friendly Downtown soccer action. Birthday girls Emma Gilberg and Mackenzie Charter were among the many who played great games.
Major 9
Motherwell defeated Aberdeen, 6-2, on Saturday.
Major 10
Barcelona held off a comeback from Real Madrid to take its third win, 3-2, in a spirited game. Emma Gilberg scored the game-winning goal for Barcelona on her 10th birthday. Her teammates Kyle Maer, a fine goaltender, and Nick Bader held the lead, even against pressure from Real Madrid’s Eric Chin, Ellen Mullan-Jayes and company.
Major 11
Thursday, Oct. 14, Lyon met Bordeaux under the lights for a rematch in which Lyon took the victory, 5-2. Miguel Duran led Lyon with four goals and Brendan Bakke scored the final goal from his defensive position. Harrison Laifer passed for three assists, and Julius Moreno and Sam Jossen had two assists each. Christen Hu deftly defended goal, although Bordeaux’ Ed Owens put his team on the board.
Over the weekend, Paris SG played another game against Bordeaux and took the win, 3-2. Bordeaux took an early lead, but Paris SG goalie Miles Schuck shut down their offense and opened the way for Paris to tie on two goals by Justin Basso and Sam Levine. The second half remained a draw until Sam Daniels took a corner kick from Basso and headed it into the goal. The team withstood a fierce surge by Max Cohen and the rest of the Bordeaux team to secure a win.
Senior 12-13
Burn defeated the Metro Stars, 3-1, on Sunday. Metro Star players Justin Montero and Nikhil Teckchandani took powerful shots, but couldn’t break through the strong Burn defense. Brian Chee scored the first-half goal for Burn before Metro Star Marlon Gershlider tied the game at 1. Burn scored twice in the second half, first a goal by Gabe Cook and a second by Mackenzie Charter, a defender who scored on a breakaway, putting the icing on her birthday. Both teams played extremely well.
Crew defeated L.A. Galaxy, 3-2. The coach of Crew thanks all the players from Fire who joined and helped Crew, who did not have enough players to field a team otherwise. Victor Smith scored 2 goals and Raymond Perez scored one, both visiting players from Fire. Crew also thanks Alex Lois, Alex Wedmore, Matt Hickey, Julius Tsai and Tim Rossi for coming to the team’s aid. Crew goalie Graham Ballard defended goal very well and Charles Chan played very good defense.
