‘Blackout’ response to girl’s letter

Two weeks ago, Martha Eckl-Lindenberg, above left, a third-grader at P.S. 364 (The Earth School), at Sixth St. and Avenue B, wrote and hand-delivered a letter to the office of Cathie Black, the Department of Education’s new schools chancellor, inviting her to an anti-charter school rally held last Thursday at City Hall. The letter read:

“New York City public school students, parents and teachers cordially invite you to hear our objections to the D.O.E.’s disastrous policies that are destroying our schools. Come to hear our Real Reforms that can actually improve learning in our schools!”

Black never wrote back to or contacted Eckl-Lindenberg or her school to inform them that she was not going to attend.
