Community Board 1 honored Pearl Scher for her years of service on the board, Tuesday night. The 91-year-old board member joined the board three and a half years ago and is known for her fiery enthusiasm, sidling up next to presenters and peppering them with questions about services for the elderly. “You’ve been a sparkplug to us all,” said board vice chairperson Richard Kennedy at the March 21 public meeting,

Although the board has given out plaques before, they are generally reserved for longtime members leaving the board or chairpersons stepping down from their positions. “It’s pretty unusual to recognize a regular member,” said district manager Paul Goldstein. But Scher is no ordinary member. “She’s quite a character, she’s really something.”
