Police officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon while responding to a domestic dispute, authorities said.
According to Chief of Housing Charles McEvoy, officers initially rushed to 108 Christopher Ave. in Brownsville, within the confines of the 73rd Precinct, just before 3 p.m. on May 13 after a woman called 911 for help, telling the operator that her enraged ex-boyfriend had threatened her life.
“A female 911 caller stated that the father of her children was en route to the location and was known to carry weapons, including machetes and hammers. She reported that he was angry because another man had been watching their children, and she stated that he believed he was on his way to kill her,” McEvoy said.
Officers from Police Service Area 2 met the woman with her toddlers in the lobby before making their way up to the apartment to find the 25-year-old suspect inside along with another man who law enforcement described as an innocent party.
The suspect brandished a knife from his waistband, McEvoy reported, and encroached upon officers.
“One officer deployed his taser, but it was ineffective. The man continued to advance towards the officers and got within a few feet. A second officer then discharged his firearm, firing two rounds and striking the man in the chest,” the chief said. “Immediately after the shooting, officers began life-saving measures and requested EMS to the scene. Thankfully, the woman and children were not physically injured.”
The suspect was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers, while uninjured, were also evaluated.
Authorities are asking people to stay clear of the area as they investigate further.
