Casket with human bones found on street near Brooklyn cemetery

The bones belonging to human hands and feet were found inside a casket that had been dug up near a cemetery in Brooklyn, but how it got there remains a mystery, police said.

The casket was found on Pilling Street, steps from The Evergreens Cemetery, at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. A cemetery worker estimated the casket had been underground for about 25 years, police said.

No one knows exactly where the casket was and authorities were still searching the grounds Wednesday evening.

“Nobody knows who dumped a casket with no body in it,” the NYPD’s 83rd Precinct tweeted out. “Investigation is ongoing 2 find the people responsible. Not Cool.”

The medical examiner will determine the identity, police said.
