The I.S. 89 Cougars almost roared back to a come-from-behind victory Sunday against P.S. 140 middle schoolers in the District 2 championship at Baruch.

The girls team, coached in Manhattan Youth’s after-school program, started off slow, but came alive in the second half, pulling ahead with their fans cheering them on.

The Cougars lost 37- 31 in a well-played game. Cougar Coach Blake Hepburn complimented the opposition, then had high praise for his team.

“They are real fighters, they are real basketball players,” he said. “They showed everyone what basketball is all about.”

He presented the District 2 championship runner-up medals to each player.
