The City Council gave the proposed Battery Maritime Building redevelopment a boost Wednesday when they voted overwhelmingly in favor of the land-use actions that will make it possible.
However, the $150 million project’s future remains uncertain because the Dermot Company, the developer, does not have all the necessary financing in place. Dermot hopes to top the historic ferry terminal with a new glass hotel and restaurant and refurbish the building’s Great Hall for public and private use.
Dermot did not return a call for comment.
City Councilmember Tony Avella was the sole dissenting voice in Wednesday’s Council vote. Avella and the Historic Districts Council joined forces last week to oppose the plan, citing landmark and architectural concerns, but the city Landmarks Preservation Commission and several other preservation organizations supported it after revisions. City Councilmember Alan Gerson, Borough President Scott Stringer and Community Board 1 also support the plan.
