Crane collapses Downtown

A 250-foot crane collapsed against 80 Maiden Ln. last Saturday evening, forcing several Financial District buildings to evacuate and the surrounding streets to close.

No one was hurt in the accident, but the city Dept. of Buildings suspended crane operator Christopher Cosban’s license, according to press reports. Before the collapse, the crane was being used to move mechanical equipment at 80 Maiden Ln., which houses the city Dept. of Investigation’s headquarters. After the workday ended, the crane began to list toward the building and struck the 23rd floor, knocking bricks and decorative elements to the street, according to reports.

By Sunday morning, the crane was removed and residents and workers were allowed to return to 2 Gold St. and 80, 83, 90 and 100 Maiden Ln. The city has not released a cause of the collapse but said Cosban was at least partly at fault.
