Details in place for C.B. 1 Hands event

The Hands Across Lower Manhattan event, hosted by Community Board 1, is now official. Beginning this Thursday, Aug. 11, members of the public can log onto www.handinhand911.org to register for the event, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10. People will be able to register as individuals or as a group.

“Several days before the event, people will receive an email telling them where to check in,” said Julie Menin, chair of C.B. 1. “There will be various tents along the route where people can check in.”

The route will start at the southern end of Battery Park and extend north along the esplanade. People will be instructed to arrive by 8:30 a.m. at the absolute latest, to claim their spot. The official start of the event will take place at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first tower was struck on Sept. 11, 2001.

When people log onto the site, they will also be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

“In the afternoon we are encouraging people to stay and participate in the projects,” said Menin. “The whole spirit after 9/11 was people lending a hand to a stranger, so the idea behind the community service aspect is to encourage people to give back.”

The volunteer projects will take place  between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. So far organizations such as New York Downtown Hospital, the NYC Rescue Mission, Manhattan Youth and the Battery Park City Parks Conservancy have jumped on board. When visitors log onto the event’s website, all of the service opportunities will be listed.
