A week before a former community organizer is inaugurated in the White House, Borough President Scott Stringer congratulated a current one, Doris Diether, Manhattan’s longest serving community board member, at her 80th birthday party over the weekend. Diether, a Village resident first appointed to Community Board 2 in 1964, worked with legendary activist Jane Jacobs to help thwart many of Robert Moses’s plans for Downtown. Diether is also a zoning consultant who has advised many neighborhood groups around the city, including the Tribeca Community Association. Over 100 people showed up to honor her including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, State Sen. Tom Duane and Councilmembers Alan Gerson and Rosie Mendez.
