NYPD and FDNY rescue divers searched the East River on Friday afternoon for a 15-year-old girl feared to have drowned after entering the water off Rainey Park in Astoria, Queens, authorities said.
The multi-agency search began shortly after noon, following a 911 call at 12:15 p.m. reporting that the teen needed assistance after not resurfacing.
NYPD harbor divers conducted an extensive search of the river north of the Roosevelt Island Bridge between Roosevelt Island and Queens with support from drones, helicopters, and harbor unit boats, but were unsuccessful in locating the teen.
FDNY Special Operations Command units also assisted in the effort until approximately 1:40 p.m., when they turned the scene over to the NYPD.
Police said there is no indication of criminal activity, but the circumstances surrounding how the girl ended up in the water remain under investigation.
As of Friday evening, the NYPD said its search efforts remain active.
