Don Mattingly, the former six-time All Star Yankee first baseman, now the Yankees’ bench coach, came to Pier 40, Greenwich Village’s youth baseball mecca, at W. Houston St. on Monday. He gave a brief hitting clinic, then to kick off the start of the summer camps on Pier 40, he donated his special blue V-Grip bats — which he personally designed — to P3 and Urban Dove, two local nonprofit groups promoting youth sports, to help make baseball more accessible, especially for low-income youth. In recognition of Father’s Day, Indevus Pharmaceuticals, in support of prostate cancer awareness, is sponsoring the limited-edition blue bats. Mattingly fielded questions from several dozen players for about 15 minutes on topics such as the Yankees versus Mets and what a typical day for a baseball player is like. “You do have to work at anything you do,” he told the youths, but qualified that by adding, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
