From left, Councilmember Chris Quinn, Jeremy Hoffman, a Quinn staff member, and Julie Kushner of the United Auto Workers were among those at a protest rally outside the Sheraton Hotel on W. 53rd St. last Thursday, calling on New School University to recognize the recent vote for a union for its adjunct, or part-time, faculty. Protesters set up a giant inflatable rat, the symbol of anti-union opposition. Inside the hotel, New School was holding its annual LaGuardia Benefit and Awards Dinner, at which former Senator George Mitchell was being honored. The university is arguing that the turnout for the union vote was too low and should not be recognized. A hearing has been set on the matter for March 31.
