The major attraction of this film is its star Gael Garcia Bernal, who has swept like a comet across the movie heavens. His recent films include “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “Bad Education,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” and “Amores Perros,” all of which are in Spanish with English subtitles. I assumed “Dot the i” would also be in Spanish but everyone speaks English.
The three principals are Kit (Gael Garcia Bernal), Barnaby (James D’Arcy) and Carmen (Natalia Verbeke) who is engaged to Barnaby. The plot is contrived, ridiculous and requires the acceptance of the unreasonable, but it held my interest primarily because of Bernal’s performance.
I can’t tell you much more about the film without giving away too much of the plot. There is lots of lust but no explicit sex by today’s standards. Whether or not you should see this movie is really a question of how much you enjoy watching Bernal perform who is very good in this film. It is very analogous to the cult that supports Woody Allen. I am part of that cult.
