Sacramental Winemaking in Hudson Square
On Thursday, November 4, Trinity Church Reverend Dr. James H. Cooper and other officials will gather at Hudson Square to blend “Vicar’s Vintage,” a new sacramental wine that Trinity Church will use to celebrate the Eucharist. City Winery vintner Michael Dorf will be hosting the event.
The ceremony will commence with the opening of a barrel of kosher wine by a mashgiach — an onsite supervisor who monitors Jewish dietary customs. Afterwards, Dr. Cooper will fortify the wine with pure grape spirits. The ceremony will end with a blessing of thanksgiving.
The “Vicar’s Vintage” will prepare for bottling and ceremonial use by Easter 2011. The wine will be distributed at Sunday services at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel, and at a midday service Mondays to Fridays at Trinity.
Kosher wine has long been served during Communion, an acknowledgement of the ancient ties between Christians and Jews.
The ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at City Winery, 155 Varick Street.
Leadership Change for Giants
Five years ago Brian Giffin and wife Courtney brought tackle football back to Lower Manhattan. This week it was announced that Griffin would step down as President of the Downtown Giants Youth Football League. Replacing him will be Julian Swearengin who has been with the organization since the beginning in 2006.
Swearengin has served on the board of directors since 2006 and has coached in the Pee Wee, Junior Pee Wee and Midget leagues.
As Griffin steps down, the board of directors for the league will be experiencing changes as well. Currently the league is looking for interested parents who might consider joining the board. The league is also seeking volunteers. If send an email to Carl Frye at fryecarl@hotmail.com.
Ed Gold memorial
A memorial for the late Community Board 2 member and early V.I.D. stalwart Ed Gold will be held on Sun., Nov. 14, starting at 1 p.m., at N.Y.U. Law School’s Greenberg Lounge in Vanderbilt Hall, on Washington Square South, between MacDougal and Sullivan Streets.
Council Speaker Christine Quinn will present a Council proclamation to representatives of N.Y.U. and Columbia Journalism School at the service, which are major beneficiaries of scholarship bequests. Speakers will start at 1:30 p.m.
