Grand reopening
Mayor Bloomberg and Peter Kalikow, president of the M.T.A., will mark the resumption of subway traffic over the Manhattan Bridge on Fri. Feb. 20 with a D train ride from Pacific St. station in Brooklyn to the Grand St. station in Manhattan.
The Grand St. station, an important stop in Chinatown, closed nearly three years ago to accommodate the bridge reconstruction. It re-opens on Sun. Feb 22 for B and D train service over the Manhattan Bridge. The N train will resume using the bridge and will no longer go to Lower Manhattan except for midnight to 5 a.m. W trains will go Downtown on weekdays, making all stops to Whitehall St. There will be added R train service to and from Manhattan during rush hours.

Community Board 1 is looking for a few good members.
The board currently has five open positions. Interested applicants can pick up applications at the board’s offices, located at 49-51 Chambers St., and then send completed applications to the office of City Councilmember Alan Gerson or to the office of Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, who approves all applications. Gerson recommends half the appointees to Fields. The deadline is March 30, but the selection process has already begun, said Judy Duffy, assistant district manager for the board. For more information, call (212) 442-5050.
Pace extension
Pace University has reappointed David A. Caputo as school president for a seven-year term running through the 2009-10 academic year. Caputo is in his fourth year of as president having first been appointed in July 2000.
Aspiring gardeners
The Battery Park City Parks Conservancy is seeking volunteers to work alongside horticulturists to maintain and develop the gardens of Battery Park City which contain up to 400 species of flowers and trees. Volunteers will receive a one-day orientation session followed with continual education by the trained horticultural staff on planting, weeding, deadheading, pruning and watering over the changing seasons. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday mornings, from May 5 through the end of October. Those applying should be able to commit to the entire season. The deadline for applicants is Wednesday, March 31 and applicants should call 212-267-9700, ext. 364.
C.B. 1 meetings
The upcoming week’s schedule of Community Board 1 committee meetings is below. Unless otherwise noted, meetings will be held in room 709 of 49-51 Chambers St.
On Tues., Feb. 24, the youth and education committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. to hear a presentation on Metro Samba Band for Metro Kids, a report on meeting with Peter Heaney of Region 9, a review of the upcoming youth fair, and a report on youth program diversity by Bob Townley of Manhattan Youth Recreation and Resources.
On Wed., Feb. 25, the waterfront committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. to hear an update on Governors Island from Jim Lima of GIPEC.
On Thurs., Feb. 26, the art and entertainment task force will meet at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the selection process for cultural elements at the World Trade Center site and an update on Councilmember Alan Gerson’s art initiatives.
