Downtown teams close out the season strong

In the bottom of the inning, the Yankees started the scoring with consecutive hits from Teddy Eustace, Ethan Wallis, Bogdanos, Rohan, Marcus Chan, Alex Monticciolo and Louis Dannatt, bringing the score to 5-0.  The White Sox answered with two runs in the second, a line drive to left field by Valentino Rosa and a single by Kaleo Grant.  Sophia Stoch was credited with both RBI when she smashed the ball for a double.

But the Yankees roared right back with singles by David Wong, Advay Sriram and Eustace, plus another two-RBI double from Wallis.  Bogdanos, Rohan and Chan also hit safely, but Grant grabbed David Lampietti’s pop-up to third to end the inning without further damage.

Both teams were scoreless in the third inning, with great defensive plays by James Borrelli, Rosa and Gabriel Colon for the White Sox.  Sharp Yankee defense—anchored by Wong behind the plate and Chan at the hot corner—kept the Sox from scoring in the fourth as well. Rosa gobbled up Eva Vignola’s hard grounder for an unassisted play at first to start the Yankees’ fourth, but Eustace reached base and Wallis nailed another shot to center field, followed by RBI doubles by Bogdanos and Rohan and line-drive singles by Chan, David Lampietti, Dannatt and Howard.

The White Sox answered with a three-run rally in the fifth inning, starting with a single from Rick Mortenson.  Kevin Wu reached first just in time, and when Stoch hit another to left field, the bases were loaded.  Jordan Roseman’s sacrifice grounder to first brought in the first run, and twin brother Josh Roseman’s single drove in two more.  The Yanks were unable to score in their half of the inning, thanks to great defense by Colon and Jordan Roseman for the Sox, despite a best-of-the-season line drive by Sriram.

For their last at-bat, the White Sox came in swinging with the top of their order, but Jack Hunter’s grounder to the mound was scooped up by Rohan, who—as he has all year—gunned it to Bogdanos at first.  Borrelli’s grounder was captured by Wallis at second, who threw a strike to Bogdanos from his knees to nab the speedy Borrelli in a real crowd-pleaser.  Colon singled, but Wallis’ defense was too much as he smothered Rosa’s grounder and threw to Bogdanos for the final out of the game and the season, with a final score in a well-played game of Yankees 14, White Sox 5.  The Yankees (10-2-1) and White Sox celebrated with trophies, treats and cheers for their coaches, their teammates and their parents.
