The Downtown Giants Junior Peewee Division, aged nine to 10-year-old, celebrated their homecoming game with a 42-34 win over the Bronx Colts at Murry Bergtraum field Saturday Oct.
This was the teams second win this season.
Highlights of the game included Matthew Tuzzino leading the team’s defense with 10 tackles and one quarterback sack.
J.J. Cruz rushed for an impressive 250 yards and scored five touchdowns.
Tuzzino and Matthew Knaus led the defense in a goal line stand in the final two minutes that allowed the team to score a game-tying touchdown. The Giant D then forced a turnover with 41 seconds left and led to the game-winning touchdown by quarterback Brennan Giffin. Griffin was 4 for 7 passing with two extra point conversions.
“Our defense showed up a bit late but gave us the big plays that enabled us to score two touchdowns in the final minutes for the victory,” said Brian Griffin, a coach and team founder.
Griffin said, “This was a huge victory for the boys as well as our program!”
Their last home game of the season will be Sat. Oct. 21. They will be playing the Pride Lions.
The Junior Peewee Division will play at 10 a.m. and the Junior Midget Division, aged 11 to 13- year-old, will play at noon.
The Junior Midget Division were beaten 30- 0 by the Bronx Colts in Saturday’s game. Devon Kolb had one interception in the game.
“They played a hard game but they were slightly overmatched,” Griffin said.
The homecoming celebration ended with a deejay and potluck lunch.
The team will have at least one more game and a playoff to end the season.
