Bright colors, big New Year
Visitors on the most recent “Access Restricted” free tour explored the Surrogates Court building at 31 Chambers St.
Thousands of visitors came to Chinatown Sunday for the first day of 4705, the Year of the Pig. The Lunar New Year celebrations, with confetti and costumes much more colorful than Wall Street’s tickertape parades, also included fire crackers at Chatham Square and for the first time, fireworks in the evening at Columbus Park.
The big parade with plenty of lion, dragon and unicorn dancers will be this Sun., Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at Mott and Hester Sts. and will make its way along E. Broadway, as well as Allen, Grand, Chrystie and Canal Sts. There will be pig races on Hester St. some time around 3 p.m.
In between the firecrackers and fireworks last Sunday, there were lines out the door in most Chinatown restaurants, which could mean the traditional greeting, gung hay fat choy, best wishes for a prosperous new year, will be prophetic.
