In a surprise comeback in the final innings, in the Greenwich Village Little League Minors Division, the Expos trumped the Cubs with a score of 7-6 at Pier 40 last Saturday.
The Expos needed to win in order to be tied in the G.V.L.L. Minors Division for first place.
The game began with the Cubs taking a 3-0 lead and scoring three more runs in the next inning.
But the Expos kept pace. It would have seemed to be a certain tie game, until Juan Acevedo stepped up to the plate. Acevedo, with the bases loaded, hit a long grand slam into center field. The center fielder watched the ball skim past his glove and all the Expos on base scored.
Braham Berg pitched an excellent two innings for the Expos, and Jeremy Cohen contributed some fine pitching in the third and fifth innings. William Staso made an impressive hit in the fourth inning, which brought in a run. Jim Fagan had a single.
With not much time left in the two-hour game, Berg pitched the final inning. In a tough moment, with bases loaded and two outs, Berg struck out the batter, leading the Expos to victory, 7-6, and capping a 6-2-1 season.
After this, the last game of the season, every kid who participated received a medal for their impressive and improved playing.
The one team the Expos tied in an earlier game happened to be the team they tied for the best record in the league, the Dodgers.
