This weekend, April 28 through 30 at Shooting Star Theater, critically acclaimed performer Nora Cole draws upon family history and famous female leaders like Winnie Mandela and Coretta Scott King to chronicle the African American experience in her second solo show, “Voices of the Spirits in my Soul.” In the staged reading — the precursor to what will almost certainly be a full-production run at a larger New York theater — Cole will use photos and letters she uncovered during her 15 years of research into her family’s history. The stories include those of her great, great grandmother, who was born into slavery but saw it abolished during her lifetime, and her great aunt, a longtime activist and founding member of her local NAACP chapter in Rochester, NY. Cole, a Kentucky native, boasts stage credits including “Jelly’s Last Jam,” where she performed opposite Gregory Hines on Broadway, as well as “And God Created Great Whales,” which won an Obie. Performance of “Voices” are at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday evenings, Saturday at 3 pm, and Sunday at 5 PM. The theater is located at 40 Peck Slip, South Street Seaport. Donation only.
