The recession has cut the number of commuters using the Holland Tunnel and the W.T.C. PATH station, the Port Authority announced recently.
Ridership at the W.T.C., the system’s busiest station, now averages 47,392 on weekdays, a 7.5 percent drop from the first nine months of 2008. PATH ridership overall is down 4.5 percent this year.
At the Holland, weekday traffic is down 2.1 percent this year, about the same percentage as at the Lincoln Tunnel in Midtown.
“These latest activity levels show the continued weakness in our economy,” Port Authority chairperson Anthony R. Coscia said in a prepared statement. “As we look ahead, our focus will be on controlling costs and making sure we invest our resources on vital transportation projects that will support the region’s economic activity.”
