More than 100 people attended a benefit Saturday night at the 6th St. Community Center to support the struggle to preserve affordable housing in New Orleans. The evening featured musical performances by Rebecca Moore, at right, Nana Soul and the group Amaru.
Moore, founder of L.O.C.O., the Ludlow Orchard Community Organization, performed with her group, The Prevention of Blindness. As she played her distinctive blue violin as well as keyboards, the artwork of East Village cartoon artist Seth Tobocman was projected on a wall behind them. Moore was born in Chelsea. “I started in experimental theater when I was 8,” she recalled before taking the stage, “and by the time I was 15, I was doing my own solo performances.” She has two CD’s available, including the recent “Home Wreckordings” on the Knitting Factory label. In addition to upcoming performances in Europe, she’s working on a third CD on John Zorn’s Tzadik label.
