Free swimming for disabled

Manhattan Youth is launching a free weekly swimming session that will allow disabled residents of Lower Manhattan to enjoy free use of the pool. The program, which is fully funded by Manhattan Youth’s Lower Manhattan Family Fund, will be held at the Downtown Community Center at 120 Warren St.

Alex Roche, director of the Downtown Community Center, expects the free program to draw a positive response. “We thought that there was probably a population down here that is underserved,” he noted. “We have this really wonderful pool and we just purchased a new lift that will offer something that people can really use.” In addition to the new lift, the warm temperature of the water makes the pool easily accessible for those with limited mobility, allowing them to stay comfortable in the water for longer without having to swim many laps.

The program is open to disabled residents of all ages and will take place on Wednesdays from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. beginning Mar. 24.
