A social media-led initiative has launched a fundraiser to provide veterinary care for some of NYC’s cutest critters: Beloved bodega cats that roam city shops and sidewalks.

NYC-based Instagram accounts—@bodegacatspirits, @bodegacatsofnewyork, @bodegacatsofinstagram and @shopcatsshow—organized the fundraiser to provide “urgent healthcare” for the city’s hardest-working felines.

“Bodega cats are quintessential New Yorkers – street-smart, hardworking, and full of attitude. While they’re cultural icons keeping our corner stores pest-free, too many lack access to basic veterinary care. This fundraiser brings together multiple influential social media accounts to ensure these beloved neighborhood fixtures receive the healthcare they deserve,” said Dan Rimada of Bodega Cats of New York.

While most bodega cats receive the healthcare they need, organizers said that others are left in the dark.

With a combined Instagram following of 1.7 million users, the organizers hope to reach their $30,000 goal by the end of the campaign on June 30. At press time, they have already amassed more than $678.

“By uniting our platforms and passionate followers, we’re determined to make a real difference for these feline New Yorkers who work tirelessly behind the scenes,” Rimada said.

Funds raised will be used to deliver vaccinations, spay and neuter services, emergency care and other treatments for meow-making mascots of neighborhood stores.

Donations will support five NYC-based feline welfare nonprofits that will deliver the services: Bronx Tails Cat Rescue, Catstoria Rescue, Hardhat Cats, Sassee Cats and Bronx Community Cats.

Donors can contribute at levels starting at $25, Rimada said, with rewards such as VIP experiences available from sponsors including Smalls, Arm & Hammer Cat Litter and Bodega Cat Whisky.
