Gingerbread fundraiser

Hold the gummy bears and pass the champagne — it’s time to decorate gingerbread houses at The Bubble Lounge.

The Church Street School for Music and Art is holding its third annual adults-only fundraiser, combining competitive gingerbread decorating with an live music, champagne and hors devours.

“As an adult, you get into it,” said Susan Duncan, assistant director of the Church Street School. At the school’s family gingerbread events, parents “almost want their kids to go away” because they get so excited about decorating.

Gingerbread houses may be fun, but the adults take the fun seriously. Some bring their own dyes for the frosting, or their own candy to create a specific look. After Hurricane Katrina, one couple created an upside-down gingerbread house, symbolizing the overturned lives left in the storm’s wake. Some pairs divide the house in half so they don’t argue over the design.

Bubble Lounge owner Emmanuelle Chiche judges the houses — with the help of her four enthusiastic children — and the winner takes home a magnum of champagne.

This year’s decorating workshops will take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and 16 at The Bubble Lounge, 288 W. Broadway. Tickets are $135 for an individual or $200 for a couple.
