Film director Martin Scorsese, right, came to Battery Park last week to announce he would produce and narrate a documentary about the Statue of Liberty to help raise $5 million in order to reopen the statue, which has been closed to the public since 9/11. Kenneth Chenault, C.E.O. and chairperson of American Express, announced that the firm, headquartered in the World Financial Center, would donate $3 million to the effort. The National Park Service has reopened the island but will not allow visitors to climb the statue until safety and security measures such as a new fire suppression system and new exits are built. Mayor Mike Bloomberg thanked both men at the ceremony. U.S Rep. Carolyn Maloney criticized the Park Service for forcing the city to raise the money for the repairs.
