New York University awarded honorary degrees to Gordon Brown, United Kingdom chancellor of the exchequer, left, and Alan Greenspan, outgoing Federal Reserve board chairperson, on Dec. 14. Brown, a Scotsman who is the number-two politician in the British government behind Prime Minister Tony Blair and who is predicted to become P.M. within the next two years and move the U.K. more to the left, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters. Greenspan received an honorary doctorate of commercial science.
